Our Research is Beautiful image competition celebrates images that showcase your research – from your science, to the people in your lab and everything that surrounds it.

Congratulations to Davide Rossetti of the CRUK Cambridge Centre for his image showing a tumour during its development in the oesophagus.

The image from Davide shows an early tumour during its development in the oesophagus (White). Mutant cells are traced with bright confetti colours, yellow, red and cyan – keratin17 (White) malignant cells; DAPI (Blue) to highlight cell nuclei, and confetti tracing (Yellow, Red, Cyan, Green) highlights mutant cell populations.

Davide Rossetti is currently working toward his PhD in oesophageal cancer in the research group of Maria Alcolea, at the University of Cambridge.

“Our organs are made of cells that protect us and constantly withstand some mutational damage. Sometimes mutated cells can acquire increased fitness, expanding and forming large patches of mutant clones. In this case, I traced these mutant cells with bright confetti colours –yellow, red and cyan – which show how these cell populations can expand, surrounding, and contributing to the development of the tumour.”

Each month, a panel of CRUK staff will review the submissions and choose the best image(s) that month. Successful entrants will be notified directly and will be awarded £100 in book tokens. The image(s) will be showcased on Cancer News for Researchers and our social-media platform LinkedIn.

The campaign is open to UK residents aged 18 or over. Please ensure before submitting an entry that you have read the campaign terms and conditions.
