Unpicking pre-malignant fatty liver disease

Many thanks to all the entrants of the October Research is Beautiful image competition – here is our worthy winner…

This entry is part 24 of 24 in the series Research is Beautiful
Series Navigation<< Latest winner in our Research is Beautiful competition

Our Research is Beautiful image competition celebrates images that showcase your research – from your science, to the people in your lab and everything that surrounds it.

Congratulations to Anabel Martinez Lyons of the University of Edinburgh for her image of pre-malignant fatty liver disease shown in human cellular models.

Unpicking pre-malignant fatty liver disease
The confocal image shows fat accumulation (green) and inflammation (red) in a co-culture model of two human liver cell types, hepatocytes (magenta nuclei) and cholangiocytes (blue nuclei). It was imaged at 40X magnification on an Opera Phenix High Content Imaging System (Revvity) at the University of Edinburgh's Institute of Regeneration and Repair.

Anabel is a Research Associate in human liver disease modelling at the University of Edinburgh.

Anabel

“One in three adults have fatty liver disease, which can lead to more severe liver-related conditions including cancer. Advanced human cellular models, like this one (called the HepaRG-116 cell line), allow scientists to study what molecular pathways drive fatty liver disease in a cell type-specific manner so that we can find treatments.”
